A shared human space on the road from checkpoint to hospital.
Road to Recovery is an Israeli volunteer association that drives Palestinian patients, mainly children and their parents, from West Bank checkpoints to hospitals in Israel.
The medical treatment itself happens in Israeli hospitals. Road to Recovery’s role is the journey: the practical, personal act of making sure Palestinian patients can get from the checkpoint to the care they need. In that car ride, something deeply human can happen — an Israeli volunteer and a Palestinian family sharing time, language, worry, silence, kindness, and trust across a reality that so often keeps them apart.
Until October 2023, Road to Recovery also drove patients from Gaza. Since then, its work has continued with patients from the West Bank.
Their Role in Civil Society
Road to Recovery plays a distinctive role in the Palestinian and Israeli civil society ecosystem by turning transportation into an act of bridge-building.
Its volunteers do not provide the medical care. They provide the connection that makes access possible. Each ride creates a small but meaningful space of shared humanity between Israelis and Palestinians: a child on the way to treatment, a parent carrying fear and hope, and a volunteer choosing to cross distance, bureaucracy, and mistrust through direct human service.
In a context shaped by checkpoints, violence, fear, and dehumanization, Road to Recovery’s work is simple, concrete, and profound. It helps people reach hospitals — and, along the way, helps keep human recognition alive.
Mission
Road to Recovery gives Palestinian families, especially children, a better opportunity to access life-saving medical treatments in Israel.
The association is made up of Israeli volunteers who drive Palestinian patients — primarily children — from checkpoints in the West Bank to Israeli hospitals. Road to Recovery also helps with the purchase of medical equipment in special cases and organizes vacations and special “Fun-Day” outings for patients and their families.
